April of 2007. It was a fascinating and colorful trip, and her slides will be arranged just that way, the

bring true nourishment to the senses of the child. In dyeing silks with plant colors, we unite the gifts
from the animal and plant kingdoms extracting the color from the plant and transferring it to the
fibers. Diligent work and artistic striving allow us to create a rainbow of colors that is enhanced by

Workshop: Plant-Dyeing for Parents and Children (Ages 6-10) Chris Marlow, co-director of the
Applied Arts program and hand work. Held at the ORCHARD HOUSE. Tickets are $60 Adults /
$30 Children, including materials. We will start with a trip to the garden to gather roots and leaves,
and return to the studio to prepare our dye pots. Water and warmth will coax the color from the
plant materials, and the silks will absorb the dye as we dip them by hand. We will also prepare sun-
dye jars to take home and tend and be surprised by. Enrollment is limited to 8 adults and 8

They All Sang on the Corner: The Roots of Doo-Wop

We'll consider the nonsense syllables, high-tenor leads, and other components of the style of
street-corner vocal group harmony singing that became known as “doo-wop” explore its musical,
social, cultural and religious roots; and listen to examples from black, white and integrated groups
and from all five boroughs of New York City. And we'll hear how this music, in its innocence and its
quest for harmony, so beautifully conveyed the poetry of inner-city life. Presented by Robert L.
Cohen. This lecture is made possible by a grant from New York Council for the Humanities.
